Netflix announced that it will launch new plans worldwide to monetize account sharing in 2023. Netflix will make it easier for people to share their Netflix account with family and friends who do not live with them by creating sub accounts or extra members. Each sub account will also get a login, a profile, and personalized recommendations.
According to Netflix, users will also be able to transfer their profiles to new accounts, which would make it easier for people who share accounts to get their own. According to Netflix, they have landed on a thoughtful approach to monetizing account sharing and they will start rolling this out more broadly starting in 2023.
After the consumer feedback, Netflix is going to offer the ability for borrowers to transfer their Netflix profile into their own account. This new strategy is similar to the tests, which Netflix is running in Latin America, and has forced its subscribers to pay an extra 2.99 dollars for each additional streaming on Netflix.
The company is aware that its subscribers have shared passwords, and they did not do anything about it until 2022, when the company reported first year-over-year decrease in its subscribers.
