European Union Passed New Law To Hold Social Media Giants Accountable For Illegal Content

The European Union has now approved the new legislation that is going to be pressuring the big technology giants such as Google, Meta and Twitter for the purpose of enforcing the illegal content on their platforms and also potentially risking the companies for paying billions in fines.

After some negotiations, the European Union has reached a deal on the Digital Services Act, which is a landmark law requiring the companies for more aggressively policing their content and also taking down anything that is deemed as harmful and illegal content very quickly.

Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Union said, their new rules is going to be protecting the users online, along with ensuring the freedom of expression and the opportunities for the businesses. She also said that, what has been illegal offline is effectively being illegal online in the European Union, which has been a strong signal for the business, countries and people across the world.

This new law has come as the European Union has presented the DSA (Digital Services Act) and a Digital Markets Act (DMA), which the European Union has approved and is also seeking for stopping the marketing power of the big technology companies. The European Union said that, this legislation has been the first in the world for targeting the digital regulation.

The European Union also said that, it is aiming to protect the digital space against the rapid spread of the illegal content and also making sure the protection of the fundamental rights of the users.
