The movie is an epic work of science fiction that was released in 2009, and it was co-edited, co-produced, written, and directed by James Cameron. Story of the movie is set in the mid-22nd century when the humans are colonizing Pandora, which is a habitable planet in the Alpha Centauri star system for mining the precious mineral called as unobtanium.
In the film, it is shown that the expansion of the mining colony threatens the existence of a local tribe called Na’vi, which is a humanoid species indiegenous to Pandora. The title ‘Avatar’ of the movie mainly refers to a genetically engineered body of a Na’vi operated from the brain of a remotely located human that is used to communicate with the natives of Pandora.
The development of the film began in 1994, when the director James Cameron wrote a script of 80 pages for the movie, and the shooting for the movie was supposed to start in 1997 for a planned release in the year 1999. However, according to James Cameron, the technology needed for the movie was not yet available to achieve the vision of the film.
The actual work on the movie began in the year 2005, including work on the language of Na’vi, and the development of fictional universe and screenplay began in early 2006. The official budget of the movie decided was 237 million dollars, because of an array of new visual effects achieved in partnership with Weta Digital.
Avatar was premiered in London on December 10th, 2009, and in the United States, the movie was released on December 18, 2009. The movie was also released for traditional viewing, 3D and 4D experiences in the theatres of South Korea.

Avatar 2: The Way of Water is the sequel to the Avatar film, directed by James Cameron from a screenplay that he wrote with Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa. The movie was produced by Lightstorm Entertainment and TSG Entertainment, and it was distributed by 20th Century Studios. In the movie, Jake Sully has a family, and he is seen exploring the oceans of Pandora to meet the Metkayina clan.
In 2006, James Cameron said that he would like to make sequels to Avatar if the movie is successful, and in 2010, the director announced the first two sequels of the Avatar franchise, following the success of the first movie, with the first sequel aimed at releasing the movie in 2014.
However, the necessity to develop the new technology in order to shoot the performance capture scenes underwater has led to significant delays, allowing the crew more time to work on the preproduction, writing, and visual effects for the sequel. The filming of Avatar 2: The Way of Water officially began on August 2017, in Manhattan Beach, California. The location for shooting the movie also moved to Wellington, New Zealand on September 25th, 2017, and the shoot was later concluded in late September 2020 after three years of shooting. The movie was filmed with an approximate budget of 350 to 460 million dollars, and it is one of the most expensive movies ever made globally.
Following the delays in the release schedule, Avatar: The Way of Water premiered in London on December 6th, 2022, and theatrically, the movie was released in the United States on December 16, 2022. The movie has successfully collected 555.9 million dollars worldwide, which made it the 9th highest-grossing movie of 2022.
Generally, the movies also got positive reviews from the critics. The critics appreciated the technical achievements and visual effects of the movie, but the narration and length of the movie were criticized.
Organizations such as the American Film Institute and the National Board of Review have named the movie as one of the top ten movies of 2022. Avatar: The Way of Water has also received several other accolades including a Golden Globe Awards nomination for Best Director and Best Motion Picture-Drama.
Along with the old cast, the new cast includes Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Jemaine Clement, and Edie Falco.
